A 20-year-old Alabama man has been indicted on multiple charges after allegedly strangling his 16-year-old ex-girlfriend, whose family found her lifeless body in a wooded area near their home in July 2024.
Jesus Monroy was taken into custody on Thursday and charged with malice murder, felony murder, feticide, aggravated assault, enticing a child for indecent purposes, statutory rape, and child molestation, according to the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office.
He also faces three counts of providing false information to police.
Tragic Discovery in the Woods
Officers with the Gwinnett County Police Department responded to a 911 call around 1 a.m. on July 15 in the 3600 block of Stephens Road in Loganville, Georgia—a community about 30 miles east of Atlanta.
Campos’ family members had grown worried when she didn’t return home after leaving with an "unknown person" the previous evening. Using a cellphone location tracker, they searched for her and ultimately made the heartbreaking discovery.
"I found my daughter laid face down," said her father, Edward Campos, describing the harrowing moment. "I knew something was wrong—her lips, her bleeding nose. They murdered my baby."
Cause of Death: Strangulation
Initially, police could not determine how Mia died. However, after an autopsy on July 16, the medical examiner ruled her death a homicide, determining the cause as "asphyxia due to neck compression," according to USA Today.
Authorities later identified Monroy as Mia’s ex-boyfriend and the father of her unborn child.
A Complex Investigation
Monroy was first arrested just days after Mia’s body was found, but at that time, he was only charged with providing false information to police. By August 2024, investigators formally charged him with Mia’s murder, but he was released after posting 10% of his $56,000 bond.
Now, with a full indictment and additional charges, Monroy has been taken into custody again and is currently being held without bond at the Gwinnett County Detention Center.
While police have built a case against Monroy, they have also suggested that he may not be the only suspect involved in Mia’s tragic death.
A Family Seeking Justice
As Mia’s grieving family prepares for court proceedings, they remain steadfast in their demand for justice.
"Justice is coming soon," said her father, Edward Campos.
Mia’s mother has since started a GoFundMe campaign to help with funeral expenses, writing:
"Mia, my daughter, the girl of my eyes, my baby, has passed away with her son in her belly. I ask God to watch over her and her baby. Now she and my grandson are in heaven with God."
Ongoing Legal Proceedings
Monroy now awaits trial on multiple felony charges, and prosecutors are expected to pursue the maximum penalty. Authorities continue to investigate, leaving open the possibility of additional arrests.
