Alaska Mother Accused of Killing 6-Year-Old Son During Alleged Hallucinations

Fairbanks, Alaska ā€“ Authorities say a mother in Alaska is facing murder charges after allegedly killing her 6-year-old son while experiencing hallucinations brought on by depression medication.

Heather Alexie, 36, was arrested in Anchorage on Saturday and charged with second-degree murder. According to the Fairbanks Police Department, officers responded to a distressing call on Friday regarding a suspicious death inside an apartment.

A concerned individual contacted authorities after not hearing from Alexie or her children for some time. When they entered the apartment to check on the family, they found Alexie's young son unresponsive with visible facial injuries.

Upon arrival, officers confirmed that the child was deceased. However, Alexie and her other child, a young daughter, were nowhere to be found, triggering an immediate search. Detectives, fearing for the safety of the surviving child, used cell phone tracking technology and located Alexie in Anchorage. With assistance from local police, officers found her at a home in an Anchorage neighborhood.

Hallucinations and a Tragic Death

According to a police complaint filed on Saturday, Alexie recently started experiencing hallucinations as a side effect of medication prescribed for depression and anxiety. The specific medicines were not disclosed.

One night, Alexie allegedly hallucinated that her son was transforming into something sinister, resembling his father and taking on the form of a "skinwalkerā€ ā€” a creature from Navajo folklore believed to have shape-shifting abilities with malevolent intent.

Panicked and convinced her son posed a threat, Alexie told investigators that she fought him off, shaking and wrestling with him until he stopped moving. The complaint states that she noticed he was still breathing and left him on the couch. By morning, she realized he had died.

Rather than contacting authorities, Alexie remained in the apartment with her daughter for another day before taking her child to a hotel. She later traveled to Anchorage with a friend, where she was eventually located and arrested after someone recognized her from a police alert.

A Young Survivor and Ongoing Investigation

Alexie's daughter later confirmed to police that she had witnessed the attack on her brother. Fortunately, authorities confirmed that the young girl is now safe.

Alexie is currently facing charges of second-degree murder as the investigation continues. Authorities have not disclosed whether additional charges will be filed or if further psychological evaluations will be conducted.

This case has left the community in shock, raising serious concerns about the potential side effects of mental health medications and the importance of monitoring individuals experiencing severe psychological distress.
