The search for 13-year-old Keimani Latigue came to a tragic end Monday when her body was found inside an abandoned, fire-damaged home on the 1100 block of Miami Street in East Toledo. She had been missing since March 18.
Keimaniās grandmother, Dorothy Latigue, initially reported her missing after returning from work to find their Elm Street home in disarray ā the front door was unlocked, the gas stove had been left on, and Keimaniās personal items, including her glasses and underclothes, were left behind. Bloody clothing and gloves were later found in a trash bin near the house, raising alarms of foul play.
Inconsistencies have surrounded the timeline of Keimaniās disappearance. Her father, Darnell Jones (also known as Darnell Ogletree), dropped her off at home on the night of March 17, but gave conflicting accounts to police about how long he stayed. Keimani later called him, frightened, reporting someone trying to break in. He and a cousin came back, but their accounts of what happened afterward vary.
Adding further concern, two unknown individuals living in the upstairs unit of the same home vanished after the teen disappeared. A witness also reported hearing a female voice from the upstairs apartment crying, āStop! Thatās enough!ā during search efforts.
Keimani had no history of running away and was known to be responsible and cautious. She confided in friends and teachers about troubling conditions at home, including claims that a man named Wayne had made her uncomfortable, and there were past allegations of physical abuse by her grandmother. Her father, who has a criminal record, was barred from having custody.
On Sunday, March 23, Toledo Police issued a felony warrant for Darnell Jones, charging him with third-degree felony abduction. He was not in custody as of Monday.
The home where Keimani was found had previously been damaged in a fire and was boarded up. Authorities removed her body around 3:15 p.m. Monday. Her mother, Tiara Kasten, arrived at the scene but was initially denied confirmation. She collapsed in grief shortly after being pulled aside by detectives and receiving the devastating news.
Keimaniās case has gripped the Toledo community, prompting widespread search efforts, flyer distributions, and social media campaigns. Police continue their investigation and urge anyone with information to come forward.
