The ongoing preliminary hearing in the case of 13-year-old Na’Ziyah Harris has brought forth emotional and detailed testimonies from family members, forensic experts, and investigators.
Testimony from Na’Ziyah’s Cousins
On Tuesday, one of Na’Ziyah’s younger cousins recounted an incident where she and another cousin were present when Jarvis Butts reportedly took advantage of Na’Ziyah. The cousin testified it was the first time she witnessed such actions by Butts, describing how he also attempted to approach her. Fortunately, she recognized his intentions and was able to refuse.
Na’Ziyah’s adult cousin, Roxy, shared her reaction to seeing Butts in court and hearing the allegations against him. “I don’t have nice words necessarily for that, but obviously I have to be strong for my family. I have to be strong for Na’Ziyah, and I’m putting my trust in the justice system,” Roxy said.
Forensic Expert Testimony
A phone record forensics expert provided a critical timeline of Butts’ cellphone activity during the time Na’Ziyah went missing and the following 36 hours. Using cell tower mapping, the expert detailed the movements and locations associated with Butts’ device, helping to piece together key moments in the investigation.
Testimony from Law Enforcement
Border patrol agent Wyatt Barnes also testified on Tuesday, describing his role in the search for Na’Ziyah. “We were responding to a missing person,” Barnes explained. “I was searching the river bank of River Rouge. We were searching south along the bank. I was on the east side of the bank in the Seven Mile and Berg area.”
Family’s Perspective
On Monday, eight witnesses, including Na’Ziyah’s grandmother and aunt, took the stand. Shannon Harris, Na’Ziyah’s aunt, testified that she never suspected anything unusual in the relationship between Butts and Na’Ziyah, believing it to be a typical uncle-niece bond.
Additional Charges Against Butts
In addition to the charges related to Na’Ziyah’s case, Butts is also facing allegations of misconduct involving two other young individuals.
Next Steps in the Case
A full day of testimony is expected on Wednesday, during which additional witnesses will be called to the stand. Afterward, the judge will decide whether the case will proceed to trial.
