Deadly Dispute at Miramar Walgreens: 'Looking Too Hard' Argument Ends in Tragedy
A misunderstanding inside a Walgreens in Miramar on Monday turned deadly when an argument between two customers escalated into a fatal shooting, authorities said.
The shooting occurred just before noon at the Walgreens located on the 2400 block of S.W. 101st Avenue, near Miramar Boulevard and Palm Avenue.
According to Miramar Police Chief Delrish Moss, the altercation began when two customers argued.
"This was an escalated dispute between two customers," Moss explained. "One of them pulled out a firearm and shot the other."
The victim, 27-year-old Anthony Souvenir, was rushed to Memorial Regional Hospital in critical condition but later succumbed to his injuries.
Suspect Arrested and Charged
Authorities took 28-year-old Jaime Taylor into custody in connection with the shooting. He has been charged with manslaughter.
Victim's Father Calls for Change
The tragedy struck on Souvenir's birthday, turning what should have been a joyful day into heartbreak for his family. His father, Yves Souvenir, shared his grief.
"He was a good kid. This is so painful," Yves Souvenir told CBS News Miami. "We were celebrating his birthday together, and he kept telling me, 'I love you, Dad.'"
Expressing frustration over gun violence, he added, "There are too many guns. If you have a problem, call the police, don't resort to violence. We need to come together to resolve our issues without weapons."
Surveillance Footage Reveals Confrontation
Miramar police reviewed surveillance footage of the incident. Around 11:20 a.m., Taylor entered Walgreens and engaged in a phone call. A short while later, Souvenir's girlfriend arrived with their baby, followed by Souvenir.
According to police, Souvenir mistakenly believed Taylor was speaking to him when he was actually on the phone. Witnesses stated the two men exchanged words before the argument escalated. When Souvenir approached Taylor, Taylor drew a gun and fired, fleeing the scene immediately afterward.
Suspect's Claims of Self-Defense
Taylor later turned himself in to authorities. During questioning, he stated that Souvenir accused him of "looking too hard" and that their argument reignited when he spoke on the phone.
Taylor claimed that when he warned Souvenir he had a gun, Souvenir allegedly responded, "I see you got one; I got one too." Fearing for his safety, Taylor said he pulled out his gun and fired when he saw Souvenir reach into his backpack—believing he was grabbing a weapon.
911 Calls Capture Chaos
CBS News Miami obtained 911 calls made in the immediate aftermath. In one call, Souvenir's girlfriend is heard frantically telling dispatchers, "My boyfriend got shot in Walgreens." Another caller described the terror inside the store: "We are afraid he is going to come back."
Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigation
Taylor appeared in court, where he was denied bond and appointed a public defender. He has stated his intention to fight the charges against him.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the full details of the incident.
