Convicted Detroit serial killer Shelly Brooks, already serving a life sentence, linked to another tragic death.

The Detroit Police Department, leveraging state-of-the-art DNA technology from Texas-based Othram Inc., has solved a nearly 20-year-old murder mystery and identified the remains of a Michigan Jane Doe.

Darylnn Washington, 46, remained nameless since her body was discovered in 2006. Thanks to advanced forensic techniques, her identity has been restored, providing closure to her family. It was confirmed that Detroit serial killer Shelly Brooks, already serving a life sentence, was responsible for her tragic death.

Brooks, convicted in 2006 of two murders and linked to at least five others, targeted vulnerable women and abandoned their bodies in desolate areas across Detroit. Washington's remains were found in an abandoned house, but her identity eluded investigators until DNA profiling traced her to surviving family members.

Detroit Police Department spokesperson Jackson Vidaurri praised the breakthrough, calling the technology "amazing" during an interview with WXYZ-TV. Washington's family, who had long suspected Brooks' involvement, now has the answers they sought for nearly two decades. This case highlights the importance of preserving evidence and the potential of DNA advancements to solve cold cases.
