FBI Confirms Jabbar Acted Alone in New Orleans Terror Attack
The FBI has confirmed that Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the suspect in the New Orleans terror attack, acted alone. Investigators have ruled out connections to other individuals or groups, despite earlier reports suggesting possible accomplices.
Timeline of Events:
December 31: Jabbar drove to New Orleans in a rented truck, posting his support for the Islamic State group on Facebook. He was later seen in Gonzales around 9 p.m. and checked into an Airbnb in New Orleans at approximately 10 p.m. Surveillance footage shows him unloading items from the truck.
January 1: Around 12:17 a.m., Jabbar set a fire in the Airbnb, strategically placing accelerants to destroy evidence. The fire extinguished itself before spreading further, allowing investigators to recover critical materials.
Jabbar then proceeded to the French Quarter, where surveillance captured him placing two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) around 1:53 a.m. and 2:20 a.m. The devices were disguised in coolers. A passerby unknowingly moved one of the coolers a block away. Both devices were later rendered safe by law enforcement.
Preparation for the Attack:Jabbar had visited New Orleans twice before the attack, in October and November, wearing Meta smart glasses to record footage of the French Quarter. He also purchased materials for bomb-making and firearms during trips to gun stores in Texas. Investigators believe he used a highly unusual explosive compound not previously seen in terrorist attacks in the U.S. or Europe.
Aftermath and Investigation:The FBI recovered multiple items from Jabbar’s Airbnb and Houston home, including bomb-making materials, precursors, three phones, two laptops, and firearms. Surveillance footage from city cameras and witness accounts have helped piece together the events. Officials have ruled out any connection between this attack and a Tesla explosion in Las Vegas.
Casualties and Public Response:The attack killed 14 people and injured 35 more as Jabbar drove a truck through crowds on Bourbon Street. President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden are expected to visit New Orleans to meet with victims' families and law enforcement officials.
The FBI has received over 1,000 tips from the public and continues to seek information about Jabbar's movements. Anyone with photos, videos, or details related to the attack is urged to contact the FBI hotline at 1-800-225-5324.
