Franklin County authorities have arrested four family members following a shocking discovery of two malnourished children and neglected animals in deplorable living conditions.

The investigation began on January 2, when deputies from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office arrested Megan Edgin, 21. According to an arrest citation, Edgin left her two young children—a two-year-old and a seven-month-old—strapped in a car seat and swing for several days. The children were reportedly found in dire conditions, severely malnourished and covered in urine and feces that appeared to be several days old.

Adding to the grim scene, deputies discovered a cat and two severely malnourished dogs at the residence on Duckers Road. Edgin admitted that one of the dogs lived in a cage "24/7," which was covered in feces and lacked food or water. The dog was reportedly stained with urine and feces. “The living conditions for the animals was poor at best,” deputies noted in their report.

Edgin faces charges including first-degree criminal abuse of a child 12 or under, second-degree cruelty to animals, and failure to vaccinate dogs against rabies.

Arrests of Additional Family Members

On January 9, the sheriff’s office arrested three additional family members—Douglas Dunaway, 51; Terrie Dunaway, 43; and Christian Dunaway, 23. All three face the same charges as Edgin: first-degree criminal abuse of a child 12 or under, second-degree cruelty to animals, and failure to vaccinate dogs against rabies.

The four family members are currently being held at the Franklin County Regional Jail as the investigation continues.

Community Outrage and Ongoing Investigation

The case has sparked outrage within the community, with many expressing concern for the well-being of the children and animals. Authorities have emphasized the severity of the conditions and the need for justice.

“These children and animals endured unimaginable suffering,” a sheriff’s department spokesperson stated. “We are committed to ensuring accountability and providing support for the victims involved.”
