Kansas City Man Allegedly Kills Three Women and Family Dog in Tragic Domestic Dispute

A Kansas City man is facing multiple felony charges after authorities say he fatally shot three womenā€”spanning three generations of the same familyā€”along with the family's dog in a horrific act of domestic violence.

Deadly Shooting Unfolds After Heated Argument

Police responded to a home in the 4100 block of NW 65th Street around 12:40 a.m. on February 2 after receiving reports of gunfire. According to court documents, a distressed woman knocked on a neighbor's door, claiming someone had shot at her.

Inside the home, officers discovered three womenā€”identified as 24-year-old Hailey Hopcus, her mother, 49-year-old Jodie Hopcus, and her grandmother, 73-year-old Sherri Duncanā€”dead from gunshot wounds. A family dog was also killed. Miraculously, one victim survivedā€”Hailey Hopcus's sisterā€”who later recounted the horrifying ordeal to police.

Shooter Identified as Victim's Boyfriend

Authorities say the suspected shooter, 50-year-old Armando Navarro, was Jodie Hopcus's boyfriend. The surviving victim reported that her mother and Navarro had been arguingā€”a frequent occurrence in their relationshipā€”when the fight escalated.

Navarro allegedly refused to leave the house, pleading that he had nowhere to go. The argument continued for nearly an hour before he retrieved a handgun and opened fire. According to the survivor's account, he first wounded Jodie Hopcus in the arm before running out of bullets. He then grabbed a knife and, later, a larger firearm, which he briefly held under his chin as if contemplating suicide.

As Jodie attempted to protect her daughter, she was fatally shot in the head. Duncan was already motionless on the ground. The surviving victim managed to flee, feeling a bullet graze her hair as she ran for safety.

Arrest and Charges

After the attack, Navarro fled the scene in a white 2020 Ford Expedition belonging to one of the victims. Authorities tracked him down in Abilene, Kansas, where he was arrested by the Dickinson County Sheriffā€™s Department and Kansas Highway Patrol.

During their investigation, police learned that Navarro had called his son around 2 a.m., confessing to the killings and prompting the son to contact law enforcement.

Navarro is now in custody at the Dickinson County Jail and faces multiple felony charges, including:

  • Three counts of first-degree murder

  • Four counts of armed criminal action

  • One count of first-degree assault

  • One misdemeanor count of animal abuse
