Miami Gardens Teacher Accused of Child Abuse After Allegedly Hitting Student

A Miami Gardens teacher is facing child abuse charges after allegedly hitting a 5-year-old student with a ruler, leaving the child with a scar near his eyebrow. Chrishawn Nicholson, 25, was arrested on Thursday following an incident that occurred in November 2024 at Aspire Preparatory Academy.

The Allegations

The incident came to light on November 21, 2024, when Miami Gardens Police responded to a child abuse report at the school. According to arrest documents, the boy’s mother reported receiving a call from Nicholson two days earlier, stating her son had injured himself with a pencil. Concerned, the mother picked up her son and took him to the hospital, where medical staff determined the injury could not have been caused by a pencil.

The boy later told his mother that Nicholson had allegedly hit him with a ruler. He repeated this claim during a medical evaluation, even demonstrating how the incident occurred. Video evidence provided by the mother reportedly showed the boy reiterating that Nicholson had struck him.

Investigation and Arrest

Following the allegations, the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) launched an investigation. Nicholson was called into the Miami Gardens Police Department on Thursday. After being read her Miranda rights, she declined to speak and was subsequently arrested. She was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

Court Proceedings

During her bond court appearance, Nicholson’s attorney argued that there was no probable cause for the charges and described the incident as a "hiccup." The attorney requested a non-monetary release due to Nicholson’s inability to afford bond. The judge set her bond at $5,000 and issued a stay-away order, prohibiting Nicholson from any contact with the boy.

Community Reactions

The incident has sparked outrage among parents and raised concerns about safety in classrooms. Aspire Preparatory Academy and local officials have yet to issue a public statement about the matter.

Moving Forward

The case remains under investigation as authorities work to determine the full details of the incident. Meanwhile, questions about classroom discipline and the treatment of students have reignited broader discussions about teacher training and oversight.
