Missouri Parents Charged for Performing At-Home Circumcision on Son

In a startling case out of Missouri, parents Tyler Wade Gibson, 35, and Bailey Alexus Gibson, 32, are facing child abuse charges after attempting to circumcise their young son at home. Without any medical training or proper tools, their actions led to severe complications, necessitating hospital visits and ultimately drawing the attention of law enforcement and child welfare authorities.

Incident Overview

On November 27, hospital staff at University Hospital in Columbia alerted the Missouri Department of Social Services after the parents brought their injured son for treatment. According to reports, the child had first been taken to Lake Regional Hospital before being transferred to University Hospital. However, the Gibsons left the hospital with their son against medical advice, further raising concerns about the child’s safety.

Deputies from the Morgan County Sheriff's Department conducted interviews with the parents. Tyler Gibson admitted to performing the circumcision at home using a sanitized blade and gauze pads. Despite conducting online research and saying a “blessing” before the procedure, he confessed to being unprepared for the amount of bleeding that followed.

Details of the Procedure

The arrest affidavit provided disturbing details about the events that unfolded:

  • Tyler Gibson used a sanitized blade to perform the circumcision and relied on gauze pads to manage the bleeding.

  • The excessive bleeding forced the parents to take the boy to the hospital.

  • A search of the home revealed an empty box of gauze but no sign of the blade used in the procedure.

Bailey Gibson admitted to law enforcement that she was hesitant about her husband’s decision to perform the procedure but assisted him nonetheless. She declined to answer questions about why she participated despite her doubts and later requested legal representation.

Medical and Legal Complications

The parents’ lack of medical expertise led to severe consequences:

  1. Excessive Bleeding: The uncontrolled bleeding posed a life-threatening risk to the child, necessitating emergency medical intervention.

  2. Risk of Infection: Attempting a surgical procedure in a non-sterile environment significantly increased the risk of infection and other complications.

  3. Legal Consequences: Both parents face child abuse charges due to their reckless and negligent actions, highlighting the legal risks of untrained individuals attempting medical procedures.

On November 29, social services intervened, removing all five of the Gibsons’ children from their home to ensure their safety.

Parental Decisions Under Scrutiny

During interviews with law enforcement, Tyler Gibson admitted to conducting the circumcision without any medical training. He claimed that his decision was based on online research and a religious blessing but acknowledged he was unprepared for the complications.

Bailey Gibson, the boy’s mother, expressed hesitancy about the procedure but admitted to assisting her husband. She cited delays at the hospital as the reason for leaving against medical advice but did not explain why the procedure was attempted at home in the first place.
