Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old accused of second-degree murder in the death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, may have lost access to a substantial family inheritance due to a stipulation in his late grandmother’s will. According to Fox News, Mary Mangione left $30 million to her children and grandchildren upon her death in 2023, but only under the condition that none of them be charged, indicted, convicted, or plead guilty to a felony.
Mary Mangione, who had 10 children and 37 grandchildren, outlined the specific conditions in her will. The stipulation stated that any grandchild involved in felony charges, especially those related to violent acts or drug distribution, would be disqualified from receiving their share. The will further emphasized that the decision of the trustees regarding this clause would be final and binding, with no benefit of the doubt granted to those accused.
Luigi Mangione’s legal troubles arose after he was charged with second-degree murder, firearm possession, and forgery following the December 4, 2023, killing of Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel. Mangione fled the scene on a bicycle, evading authorities for five days before being captured in Altoona, Pennsylvania after a tip from a McDonald’s employee.
Upon his arrest, authorities discovered a manifesto in Mangione’s possession, where he expressed disdain for the U.S. healthcare system and allegedly wrote that “these parasites had it coming.” Investigators also uncovered bullet casings at the crime scene with the words “deny,” “defend,” and “depose” engraved on them, likely referencing tactics used in the insurance industry to delay claims.
Mangione’s recent estrangement from family and friends, coupled with a reported history of chronic back pain, paints a picture of a man who had been struggling before his violent act. His mother, Kathleen Mangione, had filed a missing persons report for her son just weeks before the murder.
