Oakland County Father Charged with Child Abuse After Shaking Infant Son
A Michigan father is facing serious legal consequences after being accused of nearly causing his infant son's death by violently shaking him.
Daniel Charles Gracer, 31, has been charged with first-degree child abuse for allegedly inflicting near-fatal injuries on his 2-month-old son, according to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office. If convicted, he faces a potential life sentence.
Sheriff Condemns the Abuse
"Children are such a blessing and gift, and it is hard for me ever to understand how someone can intentionally injure a child," said Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard. "We look forward to this individual being held fully accountable."
Incident Details and Medical Findings
The incident occurred on December 23 at a home in the 7000 block of Meadow Lane in Springfield Township. When the sheriff's deputies arrived, they found the infant unresponsive. Due to the severity of his condition, he was initially taken to one hospital and later transferred to another for specialized care.
Medical experts determined that the baby suffered severe head and brain trauma. A child abuse specialist confirmed the injuries were not accidental, citing rapid acceleration and deceleration forces consistent with violent shaking. Doctors warn that the child is likely to experience significant developmental delays as a result of the trauma.
Arrest and Court Proceedings
Gracer was arrested on Friday and formally arraigned on February 8. He is currently being held on a $1 million bond. A probable cause conference is scheduled for February 18.
