Penn Hills Woman Allegedly Shoots Grandson After Heated Family Argument

A New Year’s Day family dispute in Penn Hills, Pennsylvania, turned violent when a woman allegedly shot her grandson multiple times during an argument. The incident unfolded in the front yard of a home on Saylong Drive and left the victim hospitalized in critical condition.

Incident Details

The altercation began inside the home, where investigators say Debora Morton, the 84-year-old grandmother, and her grandson became embroiled in a heated argument. According to court documents, Morton told police she overheard her grandson arguing with his brother. She retrieved a gun from her bedroom, concealing it under a shirt.

Morton reported that her grandson later entered her room, yelling and threatening to damage the house. Allegedly, he said, “I’m gonna tear you up.” At that point, Morton opened fire on him.

Penn Hills Police Chief Ronald Como stated that the threats made by the victim were “vague,” but the situation escalated quickly. After firing the initial shots, Morton reportedly chased her grandson down the stairs and continued shooting, even leaning out a window to fire toward the garage.

Victim’s Condition and Family History

The victim, who fled into a neighboring yard after being shot at least twice, was found by first responders and rushed to the hospital. While initially in critical condition, his status has since stabilized.

Chief Como noted that a modified protection-from-abuse (PFA) order allowed the victim and his brother to stay in the home. Morton told investigators the two had a history of aggressive and destructive behavior.

Legal and Investigative Actions

Morton called 911 after the shooting and admitted to firing the weapon. Police consulted with the district attorney’s office before filing charges against her. While she remains in the Allegheny County Jail, investigators are exploring whether self-defense may be considered in this case or if additional charges will be filed.

Chief Como emphasized the thorough nature of the investigation, saying, “A lot of research was done, a lot of investigating yesterday, and consulting with the DA’s office on what charges to file.”
