Snellville, GA

In a shocking case that has stunned the community, an 87-year-old woman and her 89-year-old husband have been arrested for allegedly forging documents to claim over $1 million from her deceased mother's pension payments. Mary Ann Arceneaux and her husband Ernest have been accused of defrauding the California State Teachers' Retirement System for over a decade.

According to court documents, Mary Ann's mother retired from her teaching career and moved to California in 1991, only to pass away in June 2010. Instead of notifying the retirement system of her death, the Arceneauxs are alleged to have fabricated documents to show that she was still alive falsely. "Her daughter failed to notify anyone—the bank or the retirement system—that her mother had passed," said Ryan Winderweedle of the Gwinnett County Police Department.

The arrest warrant, issued on December 10, details that Mary Ann began forging proof-of-life documents in May 2018 and submitted these fraudulent forms annually, ensuring that the pension payments continued. The funds, totaling approximately $1,116,862.69, were deposited into a bank account and later transferred to accounts controlled by Mary Ann.

When approached by reporters, Mary Ann Arceneaux denied the allegations and declined to offer further comments. She and her husband were arrested last week and have since posted bail. It remains uncertain whether California authorities will take steps to recover the misappropriated funds.
