17-year-old Austin Metcalf tragically lost his life following a confrontation at a UIL track meet in Frisco, Texas. The accused, Karmelo Anthony, also 17, asserts self-defense as the situation develops in court.

Frisco, Texas -A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded at Kuykendall Stadium during the UIL District 11-5A track meet when 17-year-old Austin Metcalf, a junior at Frisco Memorial High School, was fatally stabbed. The accused, 17-year-old Karmelo Anthony from Frisco Centennial High School, has been charged with first-degree murder.

The incident took place during the early moments of the event. Witnesses reported that Karmelo Anthony was seated under the Memorial High School tent when Austin Metcalf approached and asked him to leave. An affidavit states that Anthony warned Metcalf not to touch him. When Metcalf allegedly attempted to remove Anthony forcibly, he was stabbed in the chest.

Over 30 students and staff witnessed the altercation. One coach reported that Anthony stated, “Touch me and see what happens,” before using the knife. Metcalf collapsed almost immediately after being stabbed, and although first responders arrived quickly, he was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

His twin brother, Hunter Metcalf, was present and attempted to save Austin’s life. “He was holding the wound. He was trying to save his brother,” their mother, Meghan Metcalf, shared.

Karmelo Anthony was taken into custody shortly after the stabbing. According to police, he admitted to the act and asked whether it could be considered self-defense. Witnesses confirmed that Metcalf was the first to make physical contact.

Anthony is known in the community as a talented student-athlete who excelled in football and track. He had no history of behavioral issues or violence and was previously praised for heroic actions, including saving a child from drowning at a summer camp. Those who knew him described him as respectful, intelligent, and caring.

Even after the incident, Anthony expressed concern for Metcalf’s well-being and asked officers if he would survive.

Anthony’s legal team is seeking to reduce his $1 million bond, emphasizing his right to a fair trial. The community’s reaction has been emotionally charged, with online speculation and racially charged rhetoric circulating widely.

Civil rights leader Minister Dominique Alexander and the Next Generation Action Network have called for transparency in the investigation and protection for the Anthony family, who have reportedly received threats.

Austin’s father, Jeff Metcalf, has publicly urged the community not to politicize the incident. “This is not a race issue. This is not a black-and-white issue,” he said. “God’s going to take care of me and my family.”

Two GoFundMe pages have been launched to support the Metcalf family, while Anthony’s family is raising funds through GiveSendGo for his legal defense.

Texas follows a “Stand Your Ground” doctrine. To successfully claim self-defense, force must be proportional to the threat. Individuals who initiate a conflict typically cannot claim self-defense unless they withdraw and continue to be threatened.

The court will assess whether Anthony reasonably feared serious harm and whether the use of a knife was legally justified.

Frisco Police have interviewed more than 75 witnesses and reviewed several videos of the incident. The investigation remains active, and authorities ask anyone with additional information to come forward.

Frisco ISD has postponed the remainder of the track meet to April 7 and has provided counseling support for students and staff affected by the tragedy.

This incident has profoundly impacted the Frisco community, leaving one young life tragically lost and another irreversibly changed. As the legal process unfolds, the public is encouraged to rely on facts and respect the families affected.

Both Austin Metcalf and Karmelo Anthony were students with promising futures. Now, the community mourns while the justice system seeks clarity on what led to this irreversible moment.
