A 57-year-old Texas woman has been taken into custody following a distressing incident on Valentine's Day. During a heated dispute over a gift, she allegedly attacked her husband with a kitchen knife. Identified as Rita Tate, she was arrested on Friday and faces a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to court documents.
A probable cause affidavit obtained by Law&Crime reveals that officers from the Waco Police Department responded around 10:20 p.m. on Friday, February 14, 2025, to a 911 call reporting a domestic disturbance at a residence on the 5500 block of Black Horse Court in McClellan—approximately 100 miles south of Dallas. The call, described as a "lovers quarrel," came from Tate's husband, who reported that his wife was being violent and armed with a knife.
When officers arrived, Tate's husband allowed them into the home. He explained that earlier in the day, he had given his wife a necklace as a Valentine's Day gift, only for her to become upset because she had been hoping for a bracelet instead. He left for a few hours to diffuse the tension, expecting the situation to cool down. However, upon his return around 4 p.m., he found that the argument had intensified—Tate was visibly angry and wielding a large kitchen knife. According to his account, she was aggressively yelling at him and even challenged him with shouts of "come and get it," making him fear for his life. Feeling threatened, he recorded the encounter, and police later confirmed on video that Tate was seen holding the knife.
Tate was arrested at the scene following the incident and later processed at McLennan County Jail. As of the latest update on Thursday afternoon, she was no longer listed as an inmate at the facility.
