In a distressing incident in Missouri, a 35-year-old woman named Jacquelyn R. Powers has been arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a child resulting in death. Powers allegedly provided her 14-year-old daughter, identified as "VT," with a pill containing fentanyl that ultimately led to the teenager's fatal overdose.
The criminal complaint filed in the St. Louis County Circuit Court details the tragic sequence of events. Powers reportedly gave her daughter the pill, believing it to be oxycodone from her own past surgery, in response to the girl's complaints of a toothache. However, just 10 hours after ingesting the pill, the young victim was found deceased. The subsequent autopsy revealed that the cause of death was indeed a fentanyl overdose, with no traces of oxycodone present in her system.
Further investigation by the Overland Police Department uncovered additional disturbing information. Powers admitted to authorities that she had exchanged her prescribed oxycodone with her mother for pills purportedly bought from the streets to safeguard her mother from potential harm. In a tragic turn of events, the pill given to the victim was allegedly acquired during one of these exchanges.
Upon executing a warrant, authorities discovered other illicit drugs in Powers' residence along with other minor children present. Powers was promptly arrested at her home in St. Louis and is currently detained at the St. Louis County Jail on a $150,000 cash-only bond.
Overland Police Department Captain Jim Morgan expressed the gravity of the situation, emphasizing the tragedy of a young life lost in such circumstances. Powers is set to appear in court for a bond hearing on Nov. 19, followed by a preliminary hearing on Dec. 11.
