Nima Momeni has been found guilty of second-degree murder in the high-profile case of Bob Lee, the founder of CashApp, who was tragically stabbed to death in 2023. The jury reached a verdict on Monday after deliberating for seven days, ultimately concluding with a unanimous decision. The verdict was formally announced the following morning in a packed courtroom, where jurors, the judge, Momeni, his family, Lee’s family, attorneys, and the media all gathered.

Momeni’s mother was the only family member present in the courtroom on Monday afternoon, immediately texting on her phone as the verdict was awaited.

The prosecution argued that Momeni planned the attack, triggered by a confrontation over the sexual assault of his sister, allegedly involving Lee. Prosecutors claimed that Momeni lured Lee to a secluded spot near the Bay Bridge and stabbed him three times with a knife taken from his sister’s kitchen. The defense, however, countered that Lee, who was allegedly intoxicated from a multi-day cocaine and alcohol binge, attacked Momeni after a bad joke, prompting Momeni to act in self-defense. During the trial, Momeni testified that Lee walked away from the incident, showing no signs of injury.

Surveillance footage captured the two men leaving Momeni’s sister’s apartment around 2 a.m. on the day of the attack, and later getting out of a BMW near the location of the stabbing. Lee was found around 2:30 a.m. in downtown San Francisco, covered in blood and pleading for help before later dying at the hospital.

Prosecutors presented key evidence, including a paring knife with a 4-inch blade, which had Momeni’s DNA on the handle and Lee’s DNA on the blade. The defense argued that the DNA evidence wasn’t conclusive and that both men’s DNA should have been present on the knife handle.
