Ohio Woman Claims Self-Defense After Fatally Shooting Another in Confrontation Caught on Video
Cellphone footage captured the dramatic moments leading to a fatal shooting during a nighttime altercation in Ohio. Akira Fletcher, 23, claims she acted in self-defense, but Hamilton County prosecutors have charged her with the murder of Nyema Norton, 29.
Incident Details
The confrontation occurred on July 12, 2024, in a parking lot, with video evidence showing escalating tensions between Fletcher and two women, including Norton. Fletcher posted two now-deleted videos to Facebook, where she narrated her perspective of the incident.
Fletcher claimed she called 911 twice during the altercation, stating she was being assaulted. “I was being punched in my face, rocks thrown at me, and Nyema trying to get in my car,” she wrote.
In the first video, Fletcher and the women exchanged heated words as the women allegedly smashed her car’s rear window. Fletcher is heard warning them, “Come anywhere near me, I bet you’re gonna get clapped.”
The second video shows Fletcher’s vehicle with the driver’s window shattered. Norton and another woman are seen standing on the sidewalk. Fletcher repeatedly told the women to stop and warned them against further violence.
Norton then approached Fletcher’s vehicle, reached toward the broken driver’s side window, and lunged. Fletcher responded by firing four shots, striking both women. Norton later succumbed to her injuries on Aug. 26, 2024.

Legal Developments
Fletcher maintains that she acted in self-defense, stating she was attacked inside her vehicle and had no choice but to protect herself. She alleged that Norton attempted to stab her during the altercation.
Hamilton County prosecutors, however, argue that the shooting was an act of murder. A court hearing is scheduled for Tuesday.
